Thank you for your prompt response. The family owned property (purchased in 1847) in Glasgow--I have the real estate documents and probate records, which led me to believe he would have been buried in a cemetery in town. The notice in the newspaper "DIED...Mr John Sharnhorst of this place, of Cholera. Mr. Scharnhorst had just returned from California and come home laboring under strong premonitory symptoms." Supposition is that he had returned from seeking his fortune in California and contracted cholera along the way home, dying soon thereafter. I have wondered if there was a mass burial or if a tombstone or marker was placed and destroyed as you surmised. Makes an interesting story, but wish I knew where he was.
