MASHBURN: Hickory county, Missouri
William MASHBURN: DESCENDENTS

MASHBURN: Are they our ancestors or are they just relatives and extended family?

This study of the Hickory County, Missouri, family of William MASHBURN and Sarah COWAN MASHBURN was initiated to determine if was possible for them to be ancestors of my “Smith Cousins.” There is no Margaret Mashburn available that could be the mother of Emley Sylvia Pierce Smith. My search has lasted over two and one-half years. My conclusion is that Melissa A. UNKNOWN STARKEY PIERCE is the mother of Grandma Emley Sylvia Pierce Smith. Two of Grandma’s aunts, Sarah E PIERCE MASHBURN and Mary Matilda PIERCE MASHBURN, married Mashburn brothers, the sons of Jordan MASHBURN and Sarah COWEN MASHBURN. Their children are Grandma’s first cousins.

This work is compiled from works posted by genealogists of the MASHBURN family of William MASHBURN and Sarah COWAN MASHBURN. There is a quite limited amount of original research involved on my part. Use this information with due consideration of the many defects which may be contained in this study. As of this date, March 27, 2010, my E-mail address is larncyalviss@gmail.com (LARNCYALVISS@gmail.com). I would like to share my findings with others who are attempting to find the roots of their families in Hickory County, Missouri. I now live about 50 miles from there.
……………………………….......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Note: John Henry Pierce, the Great Grandfather of the Smith Cousins, had two sisters who married brothers Benjamin Franklin MASHBURN and Thomas Jefferson MASHBURN. These Mashburn brothers are the grandsons of William MASHBURN and Sarah “Sally” COWAN MASHBURN. Their parents are Jordan MASHBURN and Sarah COWEN MASHBURN . This is the intersection of the Mashburn and the Pierce families. See the 1860 census for Hickory County, Missouri. The Widow Sarah COWEN MASHBURN lived next to Chesley C and Mary Massey Pierce. Great-Great Aunt Sarah E PIERCE MASHBURN was already married to Benjamin Franklin MASHBURN. Mary Matilda PIERCE and her future husband Thomas Jefferson MASHBURN were still children. The descendents of these two couples are blood relatives of the Smith Cousins. The other Mashburns of any spelling, , apparently, are then extended family, blood relatives to our blood relatives. The mystery is why did Aunt Ruby SMITH RICHARDSON think that “Margaret MASHBURN” was the mother of our Grandmother Emily “Emma” Sylvia PIERCE SMITH? It seems that the identity of Great Grandmother Pierce must not have been a topic of conversation around our parents. My father, Eugene V Debs Smith, asked me to find out the name of his grandmother. I believe that “Melissa/Malisa A.” is her given name. As of this date her maiden name is not yet known.
Her first husband was W. J. Starkey of Hickory. Her second husband, Great Grandfather John Henry Pierce, was also born in Hickory County, Missouri.

This MASHBURN genealogy is included in our family because of the connection of kinship to our family. My intention is to research the immediate family members of all those who marry into our family. Hopefully, this research will become a starting place for a future family genealogist to clarify the background of our Grandmother Smith’s family. In this research one must be able to disregard my conclusion if there is evidence that my conclusion is based on incorrect information. I decided to share my research to help others untangle their roots in Hickory County, Missouri.

Google < MASHBURN > for web pages devoted to Mashburn genealogy. There was only one Mashburn emigrant to the colonies with this name. He was a late 17th century school-master from London, England. The Mashburn genealogists claim that all American Mashburns of all spellings can be traced to this one individual.

James Boren was born on September 26, 1921, in Waxahachie, Texas. He lived in several towns in south and west Texas, including Lamesa, Big Spring, Sweetwater, Snyder, and San Antonio. After receiving his master of fine arts degree in 1951 from the Kansas City Art Institute, he taught fine arts for two years at St. Mary’s College, Leavenworth, Kansas. From 1956 to 1965, he worked as a concept illustrator for the Martin-Marietta Company in Denver, Colorado. Boren’s philosophy of art always centered on traditional values. “Good drawing, good color, an understanding of the basic design and elements such as form, pattern, value, line, and texture are essential to producing good art,” he said. “This is the foundation on which an artist should build.”

In 1965, Boren became the first art director of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He provided expertise and leadership in assembling the Hall of Fame’s fine-art collections and exhibits. He left the position to devote all of his time to his painting career.

He became a member of the Cowboy Artists of America in 1968, and later served two terms as its president and secretary. He also served on the original board of trustees of the museum formerly known as the Cowboy Artists of America Museum in Kerrville, Texas. Boren was awarded twelve gold medals and nine silver medals in annual competitions in Cowboy Artists of America annual shows. In 1976, he was named Texas Artist of the Year. In 1980, he participated in a show at the Grand Palais in Paris, and in 1981, the Chinese government invited him to participate in the first Western art show held in Peking, China.

In 1989, in the annual competition of the Academy of Western Art, Boren won the gold medal in watercolor, which he called his “most favored medium.” “It offers the greatest spontaneity of expression of any painting medium,” he said, and “lends itself to beautiful transparent passages or to completely opaque gouache techniques, or a combination of the two.”
