I'll have to check into my data since our Rice Family moved to Colorado during the civil war...went through Kansas on the way back to MO, and then all were back in MO by 1880. (Also some travels to TX along the way). Charles Matthew Rice's father was George Rice (married Mary Gill) and was a Methodist Minister.
In looking at the children of George and Mary Gill, I do not see a John. There is a Joseph and Jacob. I'll let you know if I find a John somewhere.
