One of the sites below verifies there was indeed a school in Grayson as well as a few others scattered in the area. The Clinton County site below has several pictures of these schools from a book published in 1939. Most of them appear to teach up to 8th grade with the older students all in Plattsburg High School. I didn't see any Lanning surnames, but you might get lucky on some other names. I did with a picture of an old family friend and another of one of my grandfather's nieces. A very thourough census of cemeteries in Clinton County is also available there.

Plattsburg is the county seat and is where the Historical society is located. The Northwest Missouri Genealogical Society can be found in St. Joseph. I don't have any personal cotacts there, but these two sites at RootsWeb should get you started:
