I don't know if this could be a link or not. I am searching for the parents/siblings of my ggggrandfather Andrew Hiles. He is listed as living rather close to your Alexander Hale (listed as Hail in 1860 and 1870 census). My Andrew is listed as Hiles in the 1860 census, but as Hails in the 1870 census. He was born 1812 in Tenn and moved to Missouri in ?. His wife was Catherine Walker, daugher of ?, but probably related to John and Mary Walker who lived next door to them.

Grave records as well as court records (due to Bald Knobber involvement) list Andrew and/or his children as having the last name Hiles. This doesn't mean his name was always spelled like that though...

Just a shot in the dark, what do you think?
