States: Missouri: Chariton
Hi Barbara, I have recently started on this line as well. You will find some postings by another researcher, Sandy Necco, on this forum that might be helpful.
This Mordecai's father is William Lane who married Patience Greene. William moved from Guilford Co, NC to Clark Co, KY. Sandy's postings mention a will for William Lane that lists children as: Mordecai, Benjamin, John, Joel, James, Hannah Poer, Nancy Philbert, and William. (I have not seen the will. I have tried to get a copy, but I don't have an exact date and the clerks' office won't do a search). According to Sandy, Mordecai b. 1793 was the administrator for his father's will in 1814. You will also find in the Linn and Chariton county census records that Benjamin, John, and Mordecai all ended up in that area. There are also Harvey and Coleby Lane, who are younger and are probably sons of these men. The History of Howard & Chariton County Missouri mentions these Lanes as very early settlers of the area (1819-1825). It refers to Benjamin Lane as "Uncle Ben." There is also an excerpt about Mordecai Lane. Evidently a man named Oldham was shot in the back and killed. It was believed that Mordecai was the murderer. Mordecai was tried, but not found guilty. It was said that he admitted to doing the deed when he was on his death bed. I found a will index for this Mordecai in Linn County 10/21/1856. Henry Lambert and Alfred McDaniel also have wills filed on this day. The administrator for all three is a Loyd Cash. I have sent a request to the Missouri archives for Mordecai's will as this is where the wills are now, but it has been awhile and I might have to re-request the will.
I have more info if you would like to e-mail me at email@example.com. This is a work in progress for me and I would hate to post anything incorrectly. I am descended from another Mordecai Lane b. 1787 who went to Oregon on a wagon train. His parents were Thomas Lane and Nancy Dabney. I strongly believe there is a connection between these two Mordecais as clues are pointing me this way. But if there isn't a connection I would also like to rule it out.
