Jan,
I have no answer for you... I don't know where Samuel B. Gardners son William H. Gardner went after 1870. He may have md and left the area or died. Was the Wm you were looking for Wm Edward Gardner? If so I am sure he isn't ours as the 1860 census clearly says Wm H, on ours.
The Gardner I was looking at that md a Stanley was Walter B. Gardner md Nancy O. Stanley 19 Jan 1888.
The reason I asked if your client was a male descendant is that I have resently found a direct male Gardner descendant on Hutchins (Sam's brother) line who has donated his DNA. It will take several weeks for it to be processed but we are hoping. It would be another way of checking which Gardner family they are of.
Happy Hunting.
Glenda
