I believe every just about every business, if not every business was owned by the Mo. Lumber and Mining company. Have you heard that old song by Tennessee Ernie Ford where the line goes,"I owe my soul to the company store"?
There is a video at the Grandin library about the ML&M co. It talks about a H.H. Smalley Ti and Timber which operated by Chickapea.
There are volumes of information at the State Archives on the ML&M co. It would take months to go through it, even working full time. That is why I haven't pursued it yet. I do however have information on which files and microfilms have information between 1880 and 1904, which is the time period I am interested in. They include information on General correspondence, certificates of corporate registration, Mortgage info., Contracts of the co. with Smalley Ti and Timber, and other corporations and private citizens for the use of land and/or timber, bookkeeping records, and much more. What was the grandfather's name?
