I found Phoebe J. Spencer. She is buried in the Nunn Cemetery.
Phoebe J. Spencer, b. 5 August 1834; d. 20 July 1907; mother of Joshua J.; maiden name - AGEE. (Her husband, William Spencer, was taken out of the field by Union soldiers, and he was never seen again according to the Spencer family story in 1988 Butler Co. Family History Book. They, also, stated that the Spencer family moved to the AGEE area during the Civil War. Phoebe was Gart Hill's great grandfather, William Agee's, sister. William and Phoebe's children: Mary, Martha, Joshua, and Susan.)
Joshua, born 9-25-1858 married Lucy Jane Ham, born 8-27-1861 on December 26, 1878 by Reverend John D. Ham. Phoebe gave Joshua ten acres of land, and he built a house, cistern and fruit cellar. Joshua bought an additional forty acres. They had 3 children: William, Mary Pearl, and Mae. Joshua and Lucy opened their home to other children and helped raise them. Lucy died 4-28-1922. Joshua died 5-21-1941.
Mary Pearl was born 11-6-1897. On 1-7-1921 Mary married Raymond Lester Doty from Trenton, MO. Ray was born 2-11-1896. Their children: Helen Bee, Billie June, Jackie Raidene, Howard Lester, George Ronald, Geraldine Ann, and a set of twin girls who died at birth. Mary was a school teacher and then a cook. Ray was a farmer and a plumber. Ray died 4-22-1957 and Mary died 4-18-1986.
Helen was born 5-14-1922 and married Charles Edward Fisher of Poplar Bluff on 9-14-1940. They had six children: Charles Wayne, Sandra Rhea and Linda Kay (twins), Karen Sue, Janice Ann, and Diana Lynn. Charles Edward died in 1952. Helen married Wayne B. Garrison of Patterson, MO on August 13, 1955. They had two daughters: Mary Helen and Cinthia Gaye. Billie was born 11-26-1925 and married Everett B. Dunn of Chaonia, MO on 9-21-1946. They had three children: James Everett, Lois Raidene, and Terry Joe. A son and daughter (twins) died at birth. Jackie born 9-7-1927, married Jack Townsend of Fisk, MO on 12-15-1953. They had 3 sons: Kenneth Ray and Keith Wade (twins) and Kevin Wayne. Jack died 7-23-1982. Howard, born 11-16-1931, married Maxine Allen of Poplar Bluff on 5-25-1956. They had 2 daughters: Kimberly Kay and Ronda Michell. One son, Lester Allen, died when he was 3 days old. Maxine died 9-10-1984. Howard married Dorothy Ham, 4-12-1986. George born 10-9-1933, married Shirley Reynolds of Yorkville, IL on 9-30-1960. They had 2 children: Janice Raidene and George Ronald II. Geraldine, born 7-11-1936, married Ivan Long of Poplar Bluff, 4-2-1966. They had one daughter: Mary Mae.
There are 5 generations that have lived on the originally settled land in Butler County, the most recent being George Ronald II. There are a total of seven generations living in Butler County. Article from Butler County Missouri History Book.
William Spencer and his wife, Phoebe Jane (Agee) Spencer, lived in Newport news, VA on the James River. Phoebe was born 8-5-1834. They had 4 chldren: Mary, Martha, Joshua, and Susan. Using a covered wagon, the famiy moved to Agee Community on Black River in Butler County during the Civil War. A family of freed slaves came with them. William farmed part of the 120 acres he owned. One day he was working in the field when Union soldiers came through. The soldiers took William out of the field and away from his family. The family never saw him again.
