Blacks in St. Joseph MO in 1860's

Would like to know if there is any materal out there that would have anything about the Black citizens living in St. Joseph MO. around 1860's. Were any of them free or were they all slaves? What type of life did they live? Did their children go to Black schools? Is there a record of the names of these schools and a date when they started?

Thanks,
