The Smith-Black Cemetery located on what is now known as the Lucas Cattle Farm (formerly MidAmerica Dairy Farm located near Hickory Co. border)is in danger once again. A committee was formed a few years ago to clean and restore this historical cemetery. The work is now completed with a new monument, secure cattle proof fencing and other improvements however the committee finds its membership down to 2 members due to the aging and ill health of others on the committee. If anyone in Benton County or State of Missouri who have ancestors buried there would like to volunteer for a worth while cause contact me at dapper@ptd.net and I will put you in contact with the remaining members.
Family names of those buried at Smith-Black are Jenkins, Dickerson, Teague, Admire, Burton, Arnett, Barnett, Smith, Lowery, Thompson and others. This cemetery was once located on the main road from Cross Timbers, Hickory Co. to Lessley in Benton Co. but the road was changed hence the cemetery was forgotten and neglected. These cemeteries are sure to disappear unless concerned citizens take action. Please help!
Velma Sippie, descendant of Dr. William Boyce Smith
