Aunt Marie is the only one of my grandmother's sisters that I can remember and she was already a widow when I was a little girl. Maybe someone out there can help me piece this part of the puzzle together. Marie was born August 11, 1904 near Altona, Bates Co., MO to Louisiana Davis and William Henry Banke and died February 25, 1970 in Palo Alto, CA. She was married first to C.A. Gifford. Does anyone know what the C.A. stood for or their marriage date? How about his birth or death dates? In a nameless, dateless newspaper clipping it said C.A. Gifford had one of the largest cafes on the Chicago Exposition grounds. The "Cafe de Alex" was next to the General Motors Building and Mr. Gifford employed 180 people there. Either he died or they divorced. I have a photo of Marie as a Chicago telephone operator. Her second husband was Raymond J. Sherhart, born January 17, 1896 in Arcadia, WI and died March 12, 1958 in Madison, WI near where they lived after he retired from the Chicago police force. I can't seem to find a marriage date/location for Marie and Ray. They did not have any children, but Ray may have been married before and had a daughter, Marie (living with grandparents in the census), and that makes it a little confusing. If anyone can help me with these questions I sure would appreciate it. Thank you very much for any assistance with this family. Sincerely, Kathryn Hess Cheek
