Bates Co. census records may be found in the library at Butler, MO (co. seat). According to a short history of Bates Co. that I found in Butler library, there was Civil War battle there in Aug 1863. "It is said only 4 homes remained standing in Butler. All the county records, except for a very few, were hauled off in buckboards to Fort Leavenworth and never returned--and never been seen since."
Which makes research in time periods before and during Civil War almost impossible for those of us whose forebears lived in Bates Co at that time! Nancy
