Tarkio, ATchison Co 1808

this message may sound like a pipedream, and perhaps it is...a correspondent told me that members of our family (Hiatt, Proctor) settled in the St. Joseph area shortly after the Lewis and Clark expedition returned -- that they were part of a fairly large group who trapped and traded, etc....and that some were buried in an old cemetery near Tarkio....and that earthquakes (not the threat of hostilities during the 1812 war) drove them out of Missouri all the way back to Illinois....that some of them had land there as part of the 'French Colony'...what, pray tell, was that?

I am figuring that some of this is muddled by time and repetition, and that there may be a kernel of truth in it.

Anyone able to give me any leads on this very early history?
