Tombstone reads: Died January 17, 1899, age 65y 8m 1d. ---------- "Mrs. John Hart" "On Thursday, January 19, the writer conducted the funeral of Mrs. John Hart, nee Walters, who died at her home in this county, on the 17th (Jan., 1899). Mrs. Hart was born in Richland Co., Ohio, on May 16, 1833. Married John Hart of Andrew Co., Feb. 13, 1854. They had 6 sons, 2 daughters. Leaves husband, 6 children. Member Christian Church over 30 years." (Gleanings from Andrew County for January 27, 1899) Note spelling: Walters rather than Waters. ---------- 1850 Andrew Co, Mo Census family 347 Andrew PITTMAN 36 M Pa Jane A. 36 F SC Sarah J. (Info was effective as of June 1, 1850) This would indicate he was born around 1828 rather than 1830. (See notes on Abner Hart as John's biography (below) and Abner's obituary have them being born 2 months apart in 1830. As this would constitute a miracle that has otherwise gone unreported in family lore, I must assume the biography, the obituary or both are wrong. As none of the William Hart children were born within 9 months of February 24, 1828, and John thought he was 22 in 1850, John's birthyear was probably 1828 and is shown as such.) _____ 1860 Census, Andrew Co, Nodaway Twp, Mo. He is the son of William and Priscilla (Holton) Hart, the former a native of Pennsylvania, the latter of Massachusetts. In early life they settled in Ohio, where the father engaged in the tanning business until he removed to Missouri, which was about 1840. Upon his arrival there he located on a farm in Andrew County, where he died about 1865, at the age of seventy-three. The mother died about 1860. John, one of eight children, was reared on his father's farm, and received a common-school education. He was in Mexico when peace was made between that Government and the United States*2, and for the next eighteen months was a teamster there for the United States. In the spring of 1850 he went to California, and dug gold about seven months, when he returned home by water (Panama). Since then he has followed agricultural pursuits. On February 13, 1854, he wedded Miss Sarah J. Waters, of Andrew County, born on May 19, 1833. Upon marrying he settled on a farm, but two years later removed to Kansas. After tilling the soil two years in that State, he returned to Andrew County. He purchased and settled at his present location about twenty-one years ago. In politics he is a Republican. His wife is a member of the Christian Church. They have had eight children, of whom two are dead, viz.: Perry, born December 8, 1854, died September 23, 1855; Sarah A., born February 8, 1880, died April 22, 1880." (from Goodspeed's History of Andrew & Dekalb Counties; pages 506/507; Biographical Appendix, Andrew County.) *1 William Hart moved to Morgan Co, Mo., around 1838 and was listed there in 1840. By 1841, Primitive Baptist Church rolls show that William, Priscilla & family had moved to Andrew Co. The reference to Morgan Co, Ohio, is most likely in error. The Hart's moved from Richland Co, Oh. in 1838. *2 It is uncertain if he was a member of the US Army in 1848, or simply there. ---------- We know he died after January 17, 1899, as his wife's obituary says he survived her. Where he was buried and what his tombstone may say is as of yet unknown. Perhaps he's on Kentucky Ridge in Brown County, Kansas. Notify Administrator about this message?
