"Slab Byers of the St. Croix river"

My father and his father used to visit Bayport and Stillwater often many years ago (1960's). They remember a man who used to cut slab ice for refrigeration and remember he was quite a character. He still tells me stories about him to this day. He remember's he used to visit Veronica his girlfriend, to get a "plate of stew" and whatever else that was available. He used to call my dad "Butter", and was well acquainted with my grandfather. He mentioned the big walleyes he would catch on the river and never let anyone know his secrets.

Does anyone know what ever happened to him? Does anyone have any other stories about this man?

Thanks!
