Christian Zimmerman, 1850's, MN

My great-grandfather Christian Zimmerman immigrated to Minnesota (Red Wing Area) from Germany in 1856, at age 16, born 11 Sep 1839. Lived with sister and brother-in-law in/about Red Wing and then he/they moved to Winona. Served in CW with First Volunteers from Winona of 1stMNInfReg and subsequently changed his name to Samuel Smith.

Christian Zimmerman served a second enlistment in the Union Army with the 2ndRegMNInf, as a subsstitute (volunteer enlistment) for Johann Theis of Sand Creek, Scott County, MN. Was discharged for the second time on 11 May 1865. Is it possible he could have substituted for a relative or neighbor in Scott Co.?

Cannot locate Christian Zimmerman's married sister's branch of the family. Do not know last name of brother-in-law. Does anyone have a Christian Zimmerman in their background that cannot be located? I have his history from 1861 to present and would like to open up that branch of family. Thanks.
