Thanks, Joan. The 1860 census source is Series M653, Roll 573, Pages 379 - 381. The enumeration of Birch Cooley ends on Page 379 and Orkniesville follows in the middle of the page. Beaver Creek [Beaver River on the census image] starts on the same page and continues to Pages 380 & 381. Both Birch Cooley and Beaver Creek settlements list the Lower Sioux Agency as their P.O. Orkniesville lists Fort Ridgely as its P.O. Orkniesville is undoubtedly named for William and John ORKNEY who are enumerated first in that settlement. My gg-grandfather, George BURY, is enumerated with his family on Page 380, lines 23-29. His name is listed in the census index as RUY. They survived the "Sioux Uprising" and escaped to Fort Ridgely. George BURY returned to Birch Cooley in 1865 and homesteaded 160 acres in Sections 30/31 of Birch Cooley Twp. Catherine (BURY) VOGTMAN , my g-grandmother, was 14 years old in 1862 and wrote about her family's experiences in a newspaper article in 1914. What has puzzled me is if he was enumerated in Beaver Creek in 1860, he must have been in Beaver Falls Twp. at that time - I'm guessing that settlement must have been in about Section 21 or 22 from your description. Does that seem logical to you? Email me direct if you want to.
