"1931 - Merle N. Einck - 2005

Merle N. Einck was born on August 21, 1931, in Slayton, Minnesota, the son of John and Lucy (Schartz) Einck. He received his education at a country school close to the home place. After his schooling, Merle served in the U.S. Air Force as military police, and as a personal guard to President Eisenhower. On April 14, 1952, he was united in marriage to Betty Meyer at St. Leo's Catholic Church at Pipestone. She moved to Aurora, Colorado, where he was stationed. After four years in the military, Merle and Betty returned to Minnesota in 1955. They farmed near Elkton, and later north of Pipestone on the family farm, before purchasing a farm in 1966, a mile south of the home place. While farming, he also worked at the sales barn, vet clinic and Pipestone Mariner Boat Factory. In 1972, he began working as the Holland Elevator manager until November 1980, when they moved to rural Redwood Falls to manage the Redwood falls/Delhi Elevator. In 1988, he began driving bus for Theilen Bus Line and Iyanka Dakota Charter Service, while also helping out at Tersteeg's Holiday market. He continued to drive bus for Theilen Bus Line after semi-retirement too keep himself busy. Merle was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church. He enjoyed his accordion, playing polka music; Merle was active as a legionnaire attaining threshing shows and auctions. His interests included old tractors, lawn care and woodworking. Most dear to his heart was his family. Merele died unexpectedly on Sunday, January 2, 2005, at the Redwood Area Hospital at the age of 73.

Merle is survived by his wife Betty of 52 years, rural Redwood Falls; a long time companion, his dog, Maggie, a Boston Terrier; and nine children: Ruth Smith and husband Joe, Victoria, MN; Karla Whipple and husband John, Pipestone, MN; Dan Einck and wife Janet, Slayton, MN; Jerry einck and wife Karen, Pipestone, MN; Lori DeSchepper and husband Tom, Pipestone, MN; jean Miller and husband Mike, Sioux Falls, SD; Dallas Einck and wife Connie, Redwood Falls, MN; Joan Schmidt and husband Jeff, Redwood Falls and Leon Einck and wife, Cindy, Belview, MN. Also surviving are 28 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a brother Dale Einck and his wife Darleen, Perry, IA; and his brothers and sisters-in-law; Mary Anne Steel, Pipestone, MN; Clarence Meyer and special friend, LaVonne Timm, Holland, MN; Darlene Ford, Woodstock, MN; Ernest Meyer and wife Darlene, Pipestone, MN and Avis Veen and husband, Loren, Holland, MN. Merle was preceded in death by his parents, a brother in infancy and a grandson Joshua Einck.

Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, january 6, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls with burial in St. Leo's Catholic Cemetery at Pipestone with military honors. Visitation is on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls, and will continue at the church on Thursday one hour prior to the service. Nelson - Martin Funeral Service handling arrangements."
