At the time of this posting there was no "Goettig" forum, so I decided to post it to the Murray County forum. Harry Goettig Is Wounded in Italy As the war continues on all the major battle fronts, the more its effects are being felt in every village and city in the land, even as the casualties make themselves felt in our own community. The past week Mr. and Mrs. Fred Goettig had a message from the Adjutant General that their son Harry had been wounded in the fighting in Italy. Fortunately the message also stated that he was “slightly” wounded, so friends are hoping that the injuries are not too severe. Harry entered military service in August 1942. He was sent to Camp Roberts, California, for his basic training, and received later training at Camp Butner, North Carolina. He was home on a short furlough a year ago early in January, including New Years Day. Shortly after his return to camp his unit was sent overseas. Prior to his induction he was a clerk in the Helweg store. The text of the message received by Mr. and Mrs. Goettig on Friday is as follows: “Regret to inform you that your son, Private Harry A. Goettig, was on November 8 slightly wounded in action in Italy. You will be advised as reports of his condition received. The Adjutant General.” (This article came from a relative’s scrapbook. The name and date of the newspaper are unknown. There was a small black and white photo of Harry in uniform if anyone is interested please e-mail or post a reply to this message.)
