James Fitz Matthews of North Dakota, U.S.A. & Scotland
I am searching for ancestors of my ggrandfather, James Fitz Matthews b 1861 in Dickerson, North Dakota, d 1909. He married Josephine Agusta Colburn b 11/5/1874 in New England, North Dakota d 6/22/1950 in Seattle, Washington. They married in 1891 in Northfield, Minnesota. I have their entire descendent tree, but can't get past James Fitz Matthews.
My Aunt told me of how the James Fitz Matthews family came to U.S.A., ironically a week before she suddenly passed away. The story goes: "James Fitz James Clan" (as she called it) came from Scotland. This family clan was either a family member or friend of Bonney (spelling ?)Prince Charles of Scotland. This person apparently fell out of graces and was to be hanged. Anyone who was related to or a friend of, was to meet the same fate if they stayed in Scotland. So they left and this is how the James Fitz Matthews family came to be in the U.S.A. I have no idea of the time era and do not know how to research this type of story. If anyone can substantiate this type of story please contact me.
Looking forward to any insight on this story & ancestry info.
