Defoe is a very common last name in the Ojibwe heritage, some from marriage others from blood.

I bring up the Lakota and Dakota because some of my relatives were telling me stories of my Great Grandfather possibly having an affair with a Native American woman while he was away on work in North and South Dakota as well as southern MN and Nebraska. There was talk that some of his children we biracial Native Americans due to an affair of some sort. We never did get to the bottom of that, it was just something that was shamed and never spoke of, as bad as that sounds.
