I have searched and searched for the article with no luck. Just yesterday I searched through the pages of a book, The History of Decatur County Iowa. I just knew it would be there, but only found one reference to the family: Matilda's husband, Castelton Gibson. It also had a search engine but this was the only reference to the family.

I have also searched with many variations of the names in Chronicling America, Newspaper Archives, and Genealogy Bank. I found several references to Mr and Mrs Lester Barcus (Willah Mina Gibson) in Iowa, but they were just mentions of visiting, traveling, etc.

No proof of anything - I did notice on Charles Millard Rector's military records that he had dark skin.
