As it seems that you may not get a reply from the searcher, I will reply!!!!

I did some research and posted on the Gibson Forum. I came to the same conclusion that the Kiowa may not be correct. On find-a-grave Matilda's mother, Hester Ann Smith Rector, is reported to have been Cherokee (which may not be correct, either.) It, also, appears that Matilda was not legally adopted, but I did see a newspaper note that says that she was raised AS an adoptive daughter by the Vanderpools. I, too, could not find any article about her being from the Kiowa Tribe.
