Searching for the birth mother of a boy born 24 December 1910 in Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota. The boy was formally adopted in Minot, North Dakota on 22 Dec 1911 and raised near Sawyer, North Dakota. His adoptive name was Harold Klimpel and his adoptive parents were Mr.and Mrs. Richard Klimpel..
In 1940, with the tensions of the approaching war, Harold being uncertain if he was truly a US citizen, decided to formalize his own documentation and wrote to Lutheran Children’s Friend Society at 3606 West River Boulevard, Minneapolis, Minn. the agency which handled his adoption. Harold received a letter, dated 28 Aug 1940 from the Executive Secretary of the society, Rev. E.B. Glabe and Alice A. Tomhave, case supervisor which gave the “meager” details on his birth and birth mother. The Society’s records contained only his mother’s name Gunwar Lundberg and Rev. Glabe concluded “We do not have any information concerning her age, nationality, religion or her address…”
Harald’s file with the Society also said that he was born at the Maternity Hospital which in 1940 was located at 2209 Glenwood Avenue, Minneapolis. But attempting to get a complete picture of Harald’s records, the Society contacted a Miss Lohr, the Maternity Hospital’s social work director and found that the Hospital’s records indicated that Harold was brought to the hospital with his mother when he was a few hours old on 24 December 1910.
Searches in the 1910 & 1920 US Federal census for Gunwar Lundberg have not been successful. But a marriage record for a Gunwor Lundberg was found in the Minnesota Official Marriages database.
HENNEPIN 01570080 5/16/1912 PALMER, JAMES B LUNDBERG, GUNWOR
The marriage license application is online at www.familysearch.org and contains the information that James B. Palmer is residing at 716 (or 776) 6th Avenue in Minneapolis and is aged 31 (or born about 1881) and Gunwor is aged 27 (or born about 1885):
The actual marriage certificate tells that they were married by Earle V. Pierce (who was a Baptist minister) and the wedding was witnessed by Amelia Siepelt and Christ A. Pasch or Posch.
In 1909 the Maternity Hospital address is 2261 Western Ave (see city directory page at distant cousin):
Harold has passed on but he was a terrific man and I would still like to accept or eliminate Gunwor Lundberg Palmer as Harold’s birth mother or find his actual birth mother. Thanks for help.
