In Reply to: Edgar F. Barr. veteran born in Ramsey Co. St. Paul needing census by janis dunn of 18113

Hi Janis, Here's what I could find

1940 JAMIESON, MALHEUR, OR
BARR
Edd, age 40, head, farm laborer, farming, born MN, lived in Canyon Idaho in 1935

BROWN
Tom, partner, farming, born MO, lived in Canyon Idaho in 1935

*** the nice thing here is it shows where he lived in 1935 which seems to confirm this is the right fellow

1930 WILDER, CANYON, ID
BARR
Edgar F., age 31, laborer, farm, born MN father born MN mother born SD, married at age 20

Nettie R., age 30, wife, born OK parents born OK, married at age 19

Ilene R., age 10, daughter, born ID father born MN mother born OK

Edgar, age 6/12, son, born ID father born MN mother born OK

1920 CALDWELL WARD 3, CANYON, ID
BARR
Edgar F., age 20, boarder, farmer, born MN parents born US

Nette, age 19, boarder born OK father born OK mother born TN

** they are living in a boarding house

U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 about Edgar Frank Barr
Name:       Edgar Frank Barr
County:       Canyon
State:       Idaho
Birth Date:       20 Mar 1899
Race:       White

The card shows he was a US citizen, does not say where he was born
Nearest relative is Vinnie Pharris, Wilder, Canyon, ID
Card is dated Sept. 12, 1918

From the name of his nearest relative in the above record this seems to be
him in 1910 census - this time shown born SD, but it is not unusual to see different birthplaces shown in various records

1910 SOUTH VALE, MALHEUR, OR
PHARES

Frank, age 59, stone mason, houses, born IL father born Ireland mother born Germany, married 5 years, 2nd marriage

Vinnie, age 30, wife, born SD parents born Germany, married 5 years, 1 child born 1 living, 2nd marriage

BARR
Edgar, age 11, step-son, born SD father born IA mother born SD

1900 GREENFIELD, BROWN, SD
FERRENTON
Adelbert, age 38, farmer, born Sept. 1862 IA father born IL mother born OH

BARR
Ernest, age 38, farm labourer, born June 1862, ME parents born ME

Vinnie, wife, age 21, born Jan. 1879, MI parents born OH

Edgar, son, age 1, born March 1899, MN father born ME mother born MI

so once again shown as born MN , this time Vinnie born MI but again this is not unusual for census records - all depended on who gave the info and what they knew

familysearch.org shows a Harry Barr born March 20, 1899 (date matches for Edgar) Minneapolis, Hennepin, MN - father Earnest F. Barr born Caribou,Maine and mother Vinnie F. Barr born Lansing, Michigan
too bad it does not show Vinnie's maiden name

so looks like Edgar was born with name Harry.

U.S. World War II Army Enlistment Records, 1938-1946 about Edgar F Barr

Term of Enlistment:       Enlistment for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law
Component:       Selectees (Enlisted Men)
Source:       Civil Life

Education:       Grammar school
Marital Status:       Divorced, with dependents
Height:       71
Weight:       160

There is a tree I found that shows a second marriage for Edgar to Nedith Hilton - married 1966 Nampa, Canyon, ID - I did not find this marriage record so cannot confirm this info.

**** - in 1910 Edgar is with mother Vinnie and step-father Frank Phares in OR, but in 1920 Vinnie again has Barr name

1920 FAIR GROUND, ADA, ID
PHARRIS
Edward, head, age 63, divorced, born US parents born US

BARR
Vinnie, age 42, divorced, cook, born MI both parents born OH

WALTERS
Irene, age 75, divorced, boarder, born IA parents born MI

** could this Edward be a brother of Frank ??
** again Vinnie is shown born MI
** an odd thing, where it says cook for Vinnie it is under relationship, but under occupation it says Dead, also says Dead for Edward so could they have both died during the census year??

Idaho death database does have her listed.

Idaho Death Index, 1911-51 about Barr, Vinnie
Name:       Barr, Vinnie
Year:       1920
Certificate Number:       028442
County of Death:       Ada
City:       Near Boise
Date of Death:       16 Jan 1920
Date of Birth:       4 Jan 1878

and also death for Edward Pharris - listed as Edward Frances, so perhaps he is Frank after all and for some reason they were enumerated together, although divorced ??

Idaho Death Index, 1911-51 about Pharris, Edward Frances
Name:       Pharris, Edward Frances
Year:       1920
Certificate Number:       028441
County of Death:       Ada
City:       Near Boise
Date of Death:       16 Jan 1920
Date of Birth:       21 May 1856

***** looks like they died on the same day which seems odd unless there was an accident or ?? When I googled them, I see there is a Reno Evening Gazette newspaper story about them in 1920 - it says

VAN BUREN'S GRANDSON IS SHOT AND KILLED
Boise, Idaho - Jan 17
Frank Pharris, said by his wife to be a grandson of Martin Van Buren, and Vinnie Barr are dead here as a result of bullet wounds said to have been inflicted by Pharris. Mrs. Pharris said her husband deserted her twelve years ago.

** so perhaps he and Vinnie were never married but lived as man and wife?

Hope this helps a bit.

Carolyn L
