I have seen Glenwood Minnesota, in Pope County, get mixed up before with Glendive Montana. There is a family named Newton in Pope county in 1885, on the census. Walden township, but Glenwood is the closest town.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MQXL-VW6

name: John Newton
residence: Walden, Pope, Minnesota
age: 33 years
estimated birth year: 1852
birthplace: New York
race: White
gender: Male
family number: 63
volume: Pope
page number: 9
film number: 000565750
Household Gender Age Birthplace
John Newton M 33y New York
Fanny Newton F 30y Pennsylvania
Jesse Danforth M 13y Wisconsin
Charles Danforth M 7y Minnesota

Maybe they were relatives and had stayed with them on their way west?
