Hi - a quick comment about Mr. Kerwin's post. In order to find the parents of William Lewis Rappley, since they are elusive, one tries to amass as much information as possible about him. You have clearly done this. Volunteers in the forum, however, have not seen your research, and so the first step for volunteers is to find and post all possible information.

So instead of saying "I have all this info," better to realize that he saved you the trouble of a step you very well could have taken yourself - transcribing and posting needed background information.

If you can add to what Mr. Kerwin posted, great. That would be in your own best interest, enabling volunteers their "best shot" at aiding you. No promises about the outcome ultimately - just saying that the more information found (and SHARED), the better the chance that parents can be traced.

That said...whaddya got? The 1850 and 1860 census are crying out to be posted. Have you found them? I couldn't.

There seems to be a little variation in the birth year given for William (in addition to variation in the birth place Louisiana/Texas).

There is also variation in the spelling of the name, e.g., Rappley * Rapalje * Rappleye * Rapply * Raply * Rapley (in Caddo County, Louisiana) * Raffley * Raplee

William is also born at a time when only his father would appear by name in the census. He could well be grown and gone from home by the 1850 census (when children's names first appear with their parents).

No wonder it's been hard for you to locate William's parents!

This family tree (link below) puts William Louis Rappley’s birth at 2 April 1830 (NO SOURCE / NO BIRTH PLACE):

Elsewhere online this poster gives a possible place of birth for William as "near Houston, Texas."

You'll notice that Mary Tarpy's birth place is given variously as Virginia and Pennsylvania. In 1860 census (Jamestown township, Blue Earth, Minnesota) her birth place is given as Ireland (as for her parents). The various birth places reflect places where the family did indeed live. It can be that another person - not Mary herself - is informant for the census taker, and recalling stories of her childhood and making an inaccurate statement about her actual birth place.

My point is that the same can well be true for William. Likely his family did live in Louisiana and Texas, probably in that order (east to west was the usual movement of people). This is a hypothesis, NOT a fact, as I know you can readily see.

I also noticed that the children of William and Mary are given family names. (BTW Stuff like this cannot be noticed unless census records and other records are available.)

The first born daughter of William LOUIS Rapppley is LOUISA. (who is I believe the same as Lucy, not a separate person, as stated on the online family tree)

The first born son is LOUIS.

The second born son is MARTIN - the name of Mary's father.

The next born son is WILLIAM.

Other children - Mary is of course a family name, as is Ellen (Mary's sister).

Therefore one idea is that William's father is named LOUIS.
Which doesn't help at all unless we can find a Louis Rappley/Rapply etc. in the records. So far I haven't, but maybe you'll want to check it out. A long shot - but that's where we're at with finding the answers.

The earliest record I've seen for William Louis/Lewis Rappley/Rapply is 1865. Below, I'll repeat some of what Mr. Kerwin posted and add some records as well, so that they appear in this forum.

Here's the source of my statements about Mary Tarpy's father and family:

Martin Tarpey (senior - born about 1810 in Ireland) arrived Jamestown, Blue Earth, Minnesota in 1857 and is considered a founder of the town.

Previously his children had been born in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia (per Elaine Farr 1998 roots web post):

Jamestown, Blue Earth, Minnesota
Martin Tarpy 24, born about 1856 in Virginia [d 1965 Blue Earth County]
Mary Ann Tarpy 19 [ = Mary Ann McGrath per son Martin death record d 1927 ]
Martin Tarpy 1 month
Bridget Tarpy 60, mother, widowed, born about 1820 Ireland

Jamestown, Blue Earth, Minnesota

Mary Ann Tarpey 24 born in Minnesota

Here's a Rootsweb poster who says William Louis Rappley reported his birth place as Houston, Texas.

Okay, that's it - I will return to this to see what you've posted and/or try again myself.

P.S. Do you have the marriage and/or death record for William Louis Rappley? No birth place or parents listed?
