Elaine Eleanor Lundeen

Elaine Eleanor Lundeen, age 90, of Hutchinson, died Monday, July 7, 2008, at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Shakopee, after suffering a heart attack.

She was born Sept. 29, 1917, in Hutchinson Township, McLeod County, the daughter of George and Amy (Granlund) Linder. Elaine was baptized Aug. 4, 1927, by the Rev. Richard D. Orton at her Aunt Hazel Graven’s home in Hutchinson, and was later confirmed in her faith.

Elaine received her education at country school District 47 in Hutchinson Township, Bear Lake, and was a graduate of the Hutchinson High School (H.S. Merrill High School), class of 1935. She furthered her education by attending normal teacher’s training in Hutchinson for nine months.

In the fall of 1936, at age 19, Elaine started teaching country school. She taught at District 14, Lake Hook School for three years; and then at District 60, Lamson School in Meeker County for two years. Her final year of teaching, 1941-1942, was back at Lake Hook School. During her teaching career, her wages ranged from $45 to $75 a month.

Elaine was united in marriage to Clayton R. Lundeen May 30, 1942, at First Congregational United Church of Christ parsonage in Hutchinson by the Rev. Thomas H. Harding. This marriage was blessed with two children, Sandra and Clayton Byron.

Elaine and Clayton spent the first years of their marriage on Clayton’s family farm in Claremont, Minn. They then moved to the Dassel area, and finally moved to Elaine’s childhood farm in the Bear Lake community in Hutchinson Township in 1947, where they had a dairy farm and large laying hen operation.

Elaine and Clayton shared 39 years of marriage, until Clayton passed away in 1981.

A loving homemaker and mother, Elaine enjoyed working on crossword puzzles, reading, and taking care of her lawn at the farm. She loved to bake angel food cakes, and always enjoyed hosting large family gatherings on Sundays at the farm. Elaine especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hutchinson, where she was a member of the Women’s Fellowship. Elaine was also a member of the Bear Lake Sunshine Society, the Lake Jennie Stitch and Chatter Club, and the “Golden Girls” (girls in her graduating class).

Elaine moved to the Evergreen Apartments in Hutchinson in 2003.

She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Meyer and her husband, Dennis of Shakopee; son Clayton Byron Lundeen and his fiancée, Mary Blackwell of Prior Lake; grandchildren Tim Meyer and his wife, Stacy of Kellogg, and Robyn Klinker and her husband, Barclay of Hutchinson; great-grandchildren Jordan Meyer Klinker, Riley Edward Klinker, Madelyn Shea Klinker, Dylan Andrew Klinker, Clayton Andrey Meyer, and Christian Ivan Meyer; a foster brother, Leon Linder and his wife, Shirley of Hutchinson; and many other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Clayton, Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, George and Amy Linder; and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Lundeen.

A memorial service took place Friday, July 11 at 1 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hutchinson, with Pastor Brian Brosz officiating. Music was provided by organist Sharon Barton, and Pastor Brian Brosz, who sang, “The Lord’s Prayer” and “His Eye Is On The Sparrow.” Congregational hymns were “On Eagle’s Wings,” and “Amazing Grace.” Eulogists were Clayton Byron Lundeen and Robyn Klinker. Interment was at the Oakland Cemetery in Hutchinson.
