Gustaf Oman and Carl Axel Oman of Minneapolis

Based on my research I believe that my great, great grandfather Gustaf Oman (Ohman, Öman, Öhman, Åman, Åhman, with middle initial either W. or V.) was born in 1862, either in Arboga or Malma, Västmanland, Sweden, migrated to Minnesota in March 1882, and married Annie Rydberg in Minneapolis in May 1886. I believe Gustaf's brother was Carl Axel Oman (aka Charles), born in 1860, migrated to St. Peter, MN in 1879, and married Bertha (aka Betsy) Johnson in Minneapolis in 1884. At times, Gustaf and Carl lived together and/or worked at various jobs that demonstrate their close association -- as farm hands in Lake Prairie and New Sweden Townships, Nicollet County, MN, at the North Star Sawmill (Goodnow and Hawley) in Minneapolis, and for various electrical companies (Minnesota Brush, General Electric) in Minneapolis. Gustaf and Annie's son, Carl Gustaf Oman (my great grandfather), was born January 17, 1887 and by the time he was seven was adopted by Nels and Johanna Lillyquist of Norseland, MN (Lake Prairie Township, Nicollet County), the people for whom Gustaf's brother, Carl Axel Oman, worked as a farmhand in 1880. I am unsure of the reason for the adoption, but it appears as if Gustaf and Annie's marriage was shortlived and that Gustaf got married a second time, either after divorce or perhaps after Annie died (no record of either), to a woman named Christine Swanson in Minneapolis in 1890. Unfortunately, Gustaf died from typhoid fever in May 1896 and is buried at Laymans Cemetary in Minneapolis with no gravestone. A month after his death, Christine gave birth to their son Clarence, and records of them appear in Minneapolis until Clarence's death in the 1930s and Christine's death in 1940. (Gustaf and Christine may have also had a daughter who died in 1894 as an infant).

Gustaf's first child Carl Gustaf Oman, by his first wife Annie Rydberg Oman, lived with his adoptive parents, Nils (who died in 1901) and Johanna Lillyquist on their farm in Nicollet County, MN. He later married Mildred Francis (from Iowa), moved to St. Paul, MN and had several children, including my grandfather Walter, Russel, Carl, Theodore, Francis, Betty, Robert, Beverly and James. Carl, Mildred and their first children carried Carl's adoptive name of Lillyquist until sometime in the 1920s when he changed it back to his original name of Oman.

Meanwhile, Gustaf's brother, Carl Axel Oman, after many years working at various capacities for an electric company, later became a Minneapolis Street Commissioner for Ward 6. He and his wife Bertha (Betsy) had several children, including twins Albert and Oscar, Lilly, Nellie and Carl J Oman. Bertha died in 1934 and Carl Axel died (in Tarrant County, Texas) in 1937. They and some of their children are buried at Lakewood Cemetary in Minneapolis.

My main goal currently is to find out exactly where Gustaf and his brother Carl came from in Sweden (I believe it was in or around Arboga) and determine who their parents were. Gustaf's death certificate lists his parents as P.G. and Julia. Additionally, I would like to know what happened to Gustaf's first wife (my great, great grandmother) Annie Rydberg Oman and the circumstances involving why their son Carl Gustaf Oman was given up for adoption to the Lillyquists.
