my suggestion is to get a three ring binder, print it all out, read it over, think of new questions in directions you'd like to go. Send for the information from Minnesota that you can get - death certificates, Todd county historical society, obituaries. Spend a little money. Also, including all the information you have, (don't make someone else start from scratch again) you could post this at the Hordaland county query site, you will have to register, but it's free. And find out if there is anyone with a bygdebok for Samnanger, if Leroy Madson is not reachable. And if can find descendants still in Norway at that area. http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.scan-balt.norway.counties.hordaland/mb.ashx I think there are two places in Norway with the name Os. Make sure it's Os in Hordaland. Samnanger is a church parish in Os municipality. I did find Johannes Johannesen, son of Johannes Torkelsen and Anna Larsdattr, born 18 March 1844, baptised 31 March 1844 in Os. His parents are listed as Johannes Torkelsen and Anna Larsdatter from Frøland farm. He was baptised at home by Lars Larsen Frøland, on March 22 - that was done when it looked like the baby may not survive to make it to the church ceremony. A confirmed member of the church could baptise - it's still that way in the Lutheran church. Maybe Lars Larsen Frøland is mother's father? That farm, Frøland, is in Os in Hordaland, Samnanger local church, main farm number 124. I don't know if they owned, or just were tenants here at that time. The Samnanger bygdebok would say. Fylke: Hordaland Kommune: Os i Hordaland Sogn: Samnanger Gårdsnummer: 124 Navn på gård: Frøland (also spelled Frøyland?) Here is a list of all the main farm names in 1950 on a tax census taken then. Of course each main farm has several subfarms, but it's all organized by name and number. Notice that the list includes Tveit, Frøland and Røen. It think at one time Os municipality/main parish had to be divided as the population increased, and that Samnanger became a parish in it's own right. Samnanger was separated from Os on 1 January 1907. The municipality is located east of Bergen. Development of hydroelectric power plants started here in 1909. The name originally belonged to the fjord (now Samnangerfjorden). The meaning of the first element is unknown, and the last element is angr which means "fjord". More to read, plus a map. http://www.westcoastpeaks.com/Kommuner/samnanger.html The proximity to Bergen makes me believe that they emigrated from that port, but the port records online don't begin until 1874, and they left earlier, as indicated in the census USA records. I found a deaths in Samnanger search site, for the years 1885-1961 The bachelor brother of Lisbeth Thomasdatter died in 1920, he was living at the farm Røen, and I had found him in 1900 at the subfarm 2 there, which had been split from their orignal farm. 1087 2 1401 2101 0606 Ungk. kårm.
