I believe this is the family in 1900. Apologies if you already have this. 1900/MI/Houghton/Osceola Kempenan, Ch__?/head/Mar1864/36/marr9yrs/FIN FIN FIN/arrUS1885/day laborer Kempanen, Ida/wife/Mar1874/26/marr9yrs/5ch-5liv/FIN FIN FIN Kempanen, August/son/Oct1892/7/MI Kempanen, Lillie/dau/Feb1894/6/MI Kempanen, Ida/dau/Sep1895/4/MI Kempanen, Alpha/dau/Apr1897/3/MI Kempanen, Louisa/dau/May1899/1/MI In 1910 Ida is living in the same place but is divorced. Her occupation is "washerwoman" for a private family. Because Charles is so difficult to find I'm wondering if he went in to Canada to work, or even went back to Finland for a bit. I found a border crossing from Quebec to the US of Adam Kempainen and Kalle Kempainen who were traveling together and headed to Sault St. Marie in 1902. It's difficult to say if it's him, but see below. Of interest is an Adam Kemppainen who lived in Kalavala, Carlton, Minnesota and seems to have moved there around 1900. He is just a few years older than Charles and came to the US in 1889 as well. Most of his children were born in Michigan and a few more in Minnesota. This seems unlikely to be a coincidence, given that Charles was there in 1930. Does his obit mention a brother (I believe Adam predeceased Charles)? You might find more information tracing the descendants of Adam if that's the case. I looked for immigration information on them but can't find anything yet.
