S. Baldwin Olmstead and his wife Lucy (Howard) Olmstead took a pleasure trip from Sauk Rapids around June 7th 1858 to Grand Rapids on the "North Star". The trip took about two weeks. I'm very interested in finding others that have more information about this event in MN history.
After this event the "North Star" was disassembled the parts were loaded on 13 yokes of oxen and 17 teams of horses and dragged the 150 mile distance over the winter's snows. into unknown country, without roads; to LaFayette the winter was the coldest on record.
By the time expedition reached Lafayette some two months later in April 1849 there were oniy seven oxen left. The party had lost their way near Detoit Lakes, a rescue party found them and led them to LaFayette.
