Lets start by pointing you to the right County. Barnum Minnesota is located in Carlton County. You could contact their historical society directly

CARLTON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
History and Heritage Center
406 Cloquet Avenue
Cloquet, MN 55720

E-mail: cchs@cpinternet.com
Web Site: http://www.carltoncountyhs.org

There is also the county query site where you can ask the question:

http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/board/an/localities.northam.usa.states.minnesota.counties.carlton

On the Minnesota death index, I did find a Conrad Zimmerman who died in Pine County, which is the county just south of Carlton.
ZIMMERMAN, CONRAD
Date of Birth: not indexed
Place of Birth: not indexed
Mother Maiden Name: not indexed
certid# 1946-MN-012237
Date of Death: 04/08/1946
County of Death: PINE

Did they have any children when they came? What year do you think they came? There is a 1920 census and a 1930 census, but I don't pay money to use those. But I think that if someone could look online for them (Ancestry.com) in either Carlton or Pine County in Minnesota, it might give you more information.

There is a man who died later, Conrad is his middle name, and the mother's maiden name COULD be a bad pronunciation in American and a bad spelling of the Oechticker name? Wixner?

ZIMMERMAN, HERMAN CONRAD
Date of Birth: 02/10/1893
Place of Birth: OUT OF STATE
Mother Maiden Name: WIXNER
certid# 1973-MN-031171
Date of Death: 12/23/1973
County of Death: CARLTON

Pine County's historical society address is here:
PINE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

I hope that this might be of some help. If you know any dates for this couple, that would be nice.

Taryn from Minnesota
