Trying to find my maternal grandfather's birthplace

My grandfather was Arthur Leonard Renquist. He was born Jan 10, 1894; died Dec 5, 1961 in White Bear Lake. The earliest known residence I have for him is Cottonwood County, Great Bend township, according to the 1910 US Census. However, Cottonwood County has no record of him being born there. I'm in California, and I have no idea what the adjacent counties are. Can somebody help me out? My latest project has been obtaining birth/death records for my ancestors, at least up to my great great grandparents. I have been mostly successful; I've just been having trouble with Arthur, as well as my paternal grandmother.
