I am from Brainerd and I knew R.D. King, as he was always called by his wife, Maude. They lived across our back yard and were near neighbors to us on Ninth Street and Grove. At the time I knew them, Maude's brother, Mr. Laing, lived with them and I remember that they had a British Bulldog that Mr. Laing took walking every evening passing by our house. Both houses were on corner lots that measured half the block each on Grove Street.
I was born and raised in Brainerd and left in 1949 for college. I am Anne (Waldmann) Laurance, eldest of Carl and Monica Waldmann who lived at 624 North Eighth Street. Both my parents are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, my mother having died in 1960 and my father in 1980.
If you like, I can contact my youngest sister, Mary, who lives in St. Paul. She will have more recent memories of the Kings since she is ten years younger than I and lived in Brainerd for some years after I left.
My husband, Neal, was a guest in the King household on the night before our wedding and I have quite clear memories of the house and of Maude who was a good friend to my mother. They were in a neighborhood "birthday club" together and had afternoon gatherings in honor of one another's birthdays.
My memories of R.D. are more vague but perhaps Mary could be of more help. Let me know and I'll contact her for you.
