Ole Forthun's death certificate is in Book G page 297 of Clay County Deaths. It says his birthdate was 9 May 1864 Wisconsin, widowed, usual residence is Moorhead, wife's name was Sophia A. Bratland. his father's name was Sam Forthun, mother's name unknown. His obit is in The Fargo Forum, Tuesday Dec 7, 1954, page 12. It lists his name as Olaf. Olaf Forthun, 91, of Moorhead Dies Olaf Forthun, 91, a resident of Eventide Home, Moorhead, three years, formerly of the Thief River Falls, Minn., area, died in a local hospital at 7:45 a.m. today. Mr. Forthun had been hospitalized Saturday, after receiving a fractured hip in a fall. He had been at Eventide since Sept 23, 1951. He was born in Wisconsin May 9, 1863. He leaves three sons: Anton and Syvert of Casselton and Clarence of 225 Elm St N, Moorhead; four daughters, Mrs. Harold McClary, 224 1/2 1st Ave N Moorhead, Mrs. Gena Ness, Moorhead, Mrs. Carsten Ness, Halstad, MN, and Mrs. W. D. Wilkens, Ada, MN; two brothers, Thomas of Alhambra, calif, and Peter of Nuevo, Calif, and three sisters, Rachel and Christine Forthun. Alhambra and Mrs. Gena Stavang, Pasadena, Calif. Merril Moore Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Based on the death cert and obit I figured out that Ole is the oldest son of Samuel Olson Forthun and Anna Torstensdatter of Luster Parish in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. The name Forthun is the name of the church in Luster Parish where these people belonged. Ole's parents were married 23 May 1863 in Trempealeau Co, Wisconsin.Then the family moved to LeRoy in Mower county Minnesota where they resided from about 1866 to 1910. Samuel was born 3 March 1830 in Luster and died 5 May 1903 in LeRoy. Ole's mom, Anna, was born 14 Aug 1846 in Luster and died in 1933 in Alhambra, California. Ole and Sophia had at least these children: Anton and Syvert born 4 Jan 1892 in Mower Co, MN; Sophie born 5 May 1895; Gina born 30 July 1897; Clarence born 8 May 1899 in Clay County, MN; Syevern born 20 Feb 1901; Elinora born 30 April 1903 in Thief River; Olga born abt 1906 in Minnesota. I think the Syevern born 1901 is the one buried in your church cemetery. If I find anything else real important I'll post it.
