My grandfather's name was Daniel E. Hall. From the 1930 census, he was born in MN in about 1875, and it also stated that his parents were born in the US. Not sure exactly where either he or the parents were born, but one of the kids remembers him mentioning the town of Bena. In 1930, he, his wife, and five kids were living in Duluth. My mother was the second child. As far as she remembered, she lived in Duluth during her entire childhood.
My grandfather was something of a mystery. There is a suggestion of Scottish heritage, but I haven't been able to find anything to support that other than that Hall is a known Scottish surname. He was a blacksmith for the logging industry per the census, but it is not known if he was actually doing that. I haven't yet found any birth records for a Daniel E. Hall in MN.
The timing isn't right for him to be your great-grandfather's brother, as he lived until 1949, but because of the Bena connection, I couldn't help wondering if he might be related in some way, perhaps more distantly. I'm going to keep at it and if I locate a connection, I will write again.
