Are you still seeking the answer to this query:

"In the 1930 census of St. Louis County, Patrick J. Keating and his wife, Elizabeth (and two daughters, Elizabeth and Helen) have a child, age 1 living with them. His name is Roger Hanson. They had ties to Cass County. Who was Roger Hanson?"

If so, please post a transcription of that 1930 census you have. That will give volunteers Patrick Keating's date and place of birth - ditto Elizabeth, their children, and place of birth of Roger Hanson, and the specific location (within St Louis County) that we should target.

At present, one can only guess Roger is born in Minnesota, but the Minnesota Historical Society website has no Roger Hanson born in 1929. There are four Roger Hansen (-sen) born about 1928/29:

The 1940 census lists several Roger Hansons (-son) born about 1929. In Saint Louis County in 1940 there is a Roger Hanson born 1933, so that is not a match.

Also could you post the parents to both Patrick Keating and his wife Elizabeth and the siblings to both. If Roger Hanson is a nephew, or cousin, it's necessary to build a picture of the extended family in order to identify him. This is a large undertaking and worth the work if necessary - but a waste of time to re-do this work if you've already got the information.

I cannot find any of these people in the 1940 census, but lacking the DOBs and place of birth may be the reason.

OR maybe you’ve solved the riddle already. If so, bravo!
