Elmer Tolberd & wives

Elmer Tolberd born Illinois 1878 moved to Mankato, about 1904 where son Frederick Clarence & a daughter was born to wife "Matilda". Probably unknown to family then and now was that Elmer had left behind an ex-wife and son, John Francis. Elmer moved to Minnesota in company of other family members from Cerro Gordo Iowa, some settled in Anok, and near Minneapolis. Elmer left behind in Iowa an ex-wife, Gizella (Schneller) and a son, John Francis. John Francis was raised with step father's surname and when John Francis married in 1920, John Francis was told to use birth surname and neither the groom or bride knew how to spell the surname no one had ever used-so that is how the "T" ending came about in our line. Elmer's line goes back through father, Aris to John Tolberd/t and perhaps Allan Tolberd. The original line moved from Carroll Co. Virginia to Niantic Twp., Macon Co., Illinois & then Aris lived across the boundary in Logan County where the most of Aris & Eliza Simpson Tolberd/t children were born. Aris' father, John, is buried in Longpoint Cem. Niantic (town) and Aris & Eliza are buried in Brooklyn Cem. in Minneapolis. Elmer (11878-1965) is buried in La Junta Colorado along side wife #4, Helene Amelia Borchers. A 1920 census shows Elmer in Minnesota with wife #2 or 3 Grace who is of Norwegian origin. I think the order of Elmer's wives are #1: Gizella Schneller #2 Matilda Schweiger #3 Grace ?? #4 Helene Amelia Borchers.
It is possible some wives did not know of previous (or later, for that matter). Who was the daughter of Elmer & Matilda--an obit of son Frederick Clarence ca 1970's says a sister predeceased him. Was there actually a wife, Grace, or was this census taker error from info given by someone other than Elmer or wife at census time? Any info this puzzle appreciated. hanks! Gladys
