I was wondering if anyone had any information on my great great great grandfather, Martin Herbst. b. 1 Nov 1844 in Baden, Germany d. 7 dec 1913. He married Caroline Ann Balder. Here is the only information I have concerning him Married in the old log Catholic Church in Duelm, MN. They had seven children, namely: Joseph, Charles, Albert, Adolph, Clara, William and Alma. The Catholic Church in which they were married in was built by Lawrence Balzer. He was the oldest pioneer living in Benton Co., so the church was given the name `St. Lawrence`.Martin's father died at an early age and his mother remarried. The step father didn't like Martin and made him sleep in the stable. Martin Herbst came to America with his maternal uncle 1853 at the age of nine years. Settled in Indiana where they farmed until abt. 1865. Martin went north to St. Cloud, Mn. There he was employed by the freight company for almost five years. Because of the independence he had found in farming, it induced him to take a homestead in St. George Township in Benton Co. in 1869.
Thank you
