Yes, I had seen it before.

I don't wish to insult my kin, so let me say that there are more plausible explanations than those offered on this site.

For example, it has been announced recently that Germans were among the first colonists at Jamestown. These Germans were Protestants who set sail from Hamburg to escape the Thirty Years War. They were Carpenters and Glassmakers and other kinds of tradesmen. There were indentured servants among them, and possibly some Huguenots. A Cooper is a type of carpenter who makes barrels. Barrels were used to ship tobbacco, so a man with these skills was usefull to the business.

During the Reformation there was religious warfare in Switzerland, France, and Germany from about 1400 to 1600 and later. My hypothesis is that Luke Misle or his ancestors were Swiss, French, or German Protestants who escaped from the Religious persecution and grinding poverty produced by these wars by leaving for England and the new world.

It's also possible that they arrived in England during Roman times.

The main question I want to solve is, how did they get from where they must have started to England?

To me it's still an open question. But I don't dissmiss the family's oral traditions out of hand.

Are you familiar with the history of the La Tene culture? They migrated from the East, Bohemia or some place to the area around and just north of the Alps. Pretty much where you are finding the family names.
