your guess is as good as mine whether joseph & luke were brothers. i do recall they came in about the same time on different ships and allocated to different landlords. i suspect though they were related. i may have mentioned to you at one time that there was also a little place in greece named mezel or some other derivative of the name. this one went way, way back in history. somewhere i have the coordinates of the little hamlet but it was close to thessaloniki--east of it if i recall correctly. unortunately i do not have all my notes with me since i am just up I-35 from you in Seminole, OK. my mother had a stroke on Aug. 17 and i am still here helping her with her recovery. i expect to be here another month.

i think i recall mentioning to you that i suspect that the mezel family were in france and spain early--just after we started using the term A.D. many jews and jewish/christian converts came into those two countries, especially france to spread the word. some just remained jews but tried to blend into the local culture. in spain they took on new names such as periera (pear) or ballesteros for instance. names of trees, flowers, etc. when the followers of mohammed took over spain, strangely enough, they were the great protectors of the jews and they co-existed quite nicely. the pope was not nearly as considerate of either the jews or the protestant christians and there were many murderers in the name of the pope, as i am sure you know. many luckily were able to escape to britain and finally america.

i highly, highly encourage you to check out family tree dna. i also sprung for the mtDNA for my maternal side. fascinating stuff. i have been tested for y-37, as high as is presently available. you post up to ysearch and your results are compared to worldwide databases. also i posted up to the genographic project, a joint project of IBM and national geographic. all of this is through family tree dna. these databases are compared to other databases if you are willing to release your information. the cambridge database for instance.

it was good to hear from you again.
