NOTES TO OTIS FULLER
DESCENDANT OF MARK MIZELL
“THE YOUNGER”

June 4, 2004

Wow, here goes!

What follows is a result of my brief research regarding Mark “The Younger” Mizell and potentially his spouse’s family (maybe)—the Gallegos aka Gallejos, etc. In order to be brief, I will not highlight, underline or otherwise delineate the sources, as follows:

In Virginia Vital Records #1, 1600s-1800s, Obituaries from the Family Visitor, April 6, 1822-April 3, 1824, I found this: Died at Malaga, Spain, Mrs. Gravina, widow of the late henry Gravina, Esq. and sister of the late Mr. Gallego, of Richmond. Jan. 3, 1824.

In the same volume as above, Death Notices in the Norfolk Gazette and Public Ledger, 1804-1816: Mrs. Gallego……………………………….Dec. 30, 1811.

In the same volume as above, Virginia Marriage Records, Marriage Bonds from Records of Hustings Court, Richmond, VA: Wm. Mackenzie and Jane Scott (see Scott name below), Joseph Gallego, Sec., 6, Jan. 1802.

In the same volume as above, Virginia Land Records, Col. James Higginbotham, Surveyor of Amherst Co., VA: Joseph Galligo, 326.

In Virginia Colonial Records, 1600s-1700s, Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Vol. III, Huntington Library Data: BR 41, 1783-1784. Gallego and Therick. Ledger A.

In the same volume as above, Personal Names in Hening’s Statutes at Large, Surnames G-H: Gallego, Joseph, XVI, 79, 95, 100.

In 18th Century Virginia Newspapers: Leiper, Dr. Andrew, was mar. to Miss Fanny Trent, both of this city [Richmond], by the Rev. Mr. Buchanan on 27 Apr. (VGRMA 28, Apr. 94, VGGA [30] Apr. 94; of this city [Richmond] d. yesterday morn. After a short illness (DOB 18 Oct. 98); his HH and KF, medical books, and instruments to be sold by his admr., Joseph GALLEGO (Arg 7 Jun 99 ex).

In Virginia Genealogies #1 pre-1600s-1900s, Vol IV, He-S, pg 783: Pesticolas (P.A. or P.D.) was still living in Lancaster shortly after the turn of the century. In a notice which appeared in the Lancaster Journal for Jan. 9, 1802, he advertised that he and his son, Augustus, would teach music on the harpsichord or pianoforte and that Philippe would tune those instruments and take likenesses at his usual price. Two years later, Joseph Gallego, an uncle of Count Ferdinand de Lesseps and founder of the famous Gallego Flouring Mills, persuaded Peticolas to move to Richmond………………………

In Virginia Genealogies and Bios., 1500s-1900s, Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Vol. II: Bio of Phillippe S. Peticolas, born in Mezicres, France, Mar. 22, 1760, son of Col. Nicholas Peticolas, a veteran French soldier—About 1835 he was induced by Joseph Gallego (an uncle of Count Ferdinand de Lesseps), the founder of the famous Gallego flouring mills, to make his home in Richmond, VA.

Since we know from a previous record that Joseph Gallego was deceased before 1824, we know that it could not have been in 1835 that Joseph Gallego induced Messr. Pesticolas to come to Richmond unless it was Joseph Gallego, Jr. I don’t know what to make of the discreptancy in dates in the two records above.

Jos. Gallego was found in our data volume, American Source Records in England, 1600s-1800s, which is part of the International & Passenger Records subscription. (Found this at Genealogy dot com).

As usual, when I go through records like these, I always find a very useful nugget. I did this time as well. As follows:

In Early N. Carolina Settlers, 1700s-1900s, Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. I, Contents – Oct. 1900, Abstract of Wills: Speir, Elizabeth, Pitt Co., NC, Oct. 29th, 1773. Nephew Joseph Warren (son of brother Joseph), nephew Wm. Smydick (son of Mary Smydick), Jno. Smydick (son of Edward), Fancher Smydick (dau. of David), Liza Warren (daughter of Edward), Mary Meesel (daughter of Mark), niece Eliz. Warren (daughter of Joseph), Sam’l Smydick (son of Mary), James Scott, brother of Mathias dec’d, nephews Mark Meesel and Joseph Warren Exrs. Test Geo. Evans, Jno. Hardee, Major Harris.

Also: Speir, John, Craven Prec., Jan. 5th, 1760. Nov. Court, 1767. Wife Elizabeth, daughter Cleare Hardee, daughters Patience Jeffrys and Apple Holland, brother Wm. Spier, John Speir, Jr., and Alex Stuart Exrs. Test Wm. Speir, Alex Stewart, John Speir, Jr.

In another record, it is written differently, this time it includes the name of William Meesel as well, as follows:

In N. Carolina Wills, 1665-1900, Abstract of N. Carolina Wills, 1690-1760, Surnames S-T, Pitt County: Speir, Elizabeth, Oct. 9, 1773. March 23, 1774. Nephews: Joseph Warren (two negroes), William Smydick, Marke Mesell (three negroes). Other legatees: Mary Smydick, John Smydick, Edmond Smydick, Famaler Smydick, Mary Meesel, Elizabeth Warren, Joseph Warren, James and Mathew Scott, William Meesel. Executors: Mark Meesel and Joseph Warren, Jr. Witnesses: Geo. Evans, John Hardee, Major Harris. Proven before Jo. Martin.

Also: Speir, John, Bertie Co., Jan. 8, 1761. June Court, 1767. Wife: Elizabeth (negro boy and other chattels). Daughters: Cleare (sic--may be Clary or Clara) Hardee (“all my lands in North Carolina”), Patience Jeffreys, Apsele Holland. Executors: John & Wm. Spiers (Brothers) and Alexander Stewart. Witnesses: Wm. Spier, Alex. Stewart, John Spier, Junior. Clerk of the Court: Amb Cox Bayley.

I would bet that Smydick is actually Smithwick (Smythwicke). Just a guess, but an educated guess. The William Meesel may be William Jr., the brother of Mark, who has to be Mark Sr., according to the dates. Elizabeth Spier may be the sister of Elleanor Smythwicke. Elleanor or Ellinor did have a sister by the name of Elizabeth. Another guess, but the name Hardee or Hardy may be where we picked up the name or nickname, “Hardy”.

I want to refer you to two websites, one of which is crucial. Anyone related to the Mizells should refer to it and go over it very thoroughly, especially the latter.

The first is a pretty good summation of Luke, the Immigrant, Mizell’s descendants, or at least in part. After much research and study, I believe it does make the mistake however, of assigning children of Lawrence Mizell to Luke Mizell, Jr. The only written evidence of children assignable to Luke Jr. is two daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah. I believe Luke Mizell (“The Third”) was the son of Lawrence and not Luke Jr., as is William Sr., as well as Ellinor and Mary.

Bob Baird, a Certified Genealogist, does a very good job of outlining the reasons why, with good documentation on his website (second one referenced above). Everyone should read fully, as well the pointers on genealogical research (see the bottom of the page on his website) before drawing any final conclusions on the descendants of Lawrence and Luke Jr.

If you want original copies of that which I referenced, let me know what address to which to mail it.
