James St Leger Mitchell, Dublin c1800
Hi,
Trying to find more information about James St Leger Mitchell c1750-c1827 married to Elenor O'Neill of Tyrone. He was the Agent of the Earl of Wicklow (I presume this would be William Howard married to Eleanor Caulfield). He lived and brought up his family in Dublin but supposedly had a summer home in Castleforward. Though a Protestant his wife Eleanor was Catholic. His 2 sons, Richard and James were brought up as Protestant and 3 daughters were raised as Catholic. He was religiously very liberal and was friendly with Father Tom Maguire, the priest who famously preachedin Dublin in the 1820's and who helped bring about Catholic emancipation.
I can't find any records at all for James and Elenor and only got their names and the above information from old letters written around 1900.
Son Richard was born in 1787 in Dublin according to dates on his tombstone, and went to Madras, India sometime before 1809 when he married there. He was active in the Masons there.
Son James and one daughter, Mary, emigrated to America but don't know when.
Youngest daughter, Frances Lucinda, born 1799, married wealthy Derry merchant Thomas White in 1825.
I have extensive family trees for Richard and Frances Lucinda but nothing at all for the others.
As Richard's family kept the middle name St Leger down through the generations I wonder if there are any American Mitchell's who have it?
I have reached a complete blank wall now with this family and would appreciate any suggestions regarding what I can try next.
Thanks
