Susan,
Came across your post and I think/hope I am looking for someone in the same family. My gggrandmother was a housekeeper/cook on the Claude R Mitchell ranch in the early 1900's. C R Mitchell was in the census designated place (cdp) called Gazelle which is a few miles south of Fort Jones.

My gggrandmother, Ida Babcock, was raising her granddaughter Aline Bhaer who, according to the documents I have found, list her as a servant to the Mitchell's.

Aline was married at the Mitchell's ranch to George W Geiger in 1919. Since Aline was only 16 the state required a male guardian to give permission so Claude Mitchell became that guardian days before the wedding. I have copies of all the guardianship papers along with the marriage records and court records.

I went to Yreka myself for the papers and tried to locate the Mitchell's or the ranch but I ran out of time (we were just traveling through at Christmas).

Do you think we are talking about the same family? I would love to hear what you think.

Karen
