The DNA project is what has prompted me to re-visit the Mitchell family. It's amazing how DNA disproves a lot of earlier assumptions. There is only one guy whose line traces to Daniel Mitchell b1781 in Bedford Co, VA in the project.I believe that this is the line of Robert and Mary Enos Mitchell, as several of his descendants remained in Bedford.(R1b Group 4 at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Mitchell/default.aspx?section=ycolorizedhttp://www.familytreedna.com/public/Mitchell/default.aspx?section=ycolorized )
Another match in that group goes back to Andrew Mitchell actually born 1790-1800.So far, his father is a mystery.Andrew's family moved from Putnam Co, IN to Buchanan Co, MO in the 1840's.The 1850 census for him is missing children, the ages are wrong, as are probably the birth places - in other words a neighbor gave the info.Andrew and Mary both died before 1860.One interesting thing about this family is that they have retained the story of the kidnapping of Sarah Mitchell (Robert, Daniel). They've changed the main character to Andrew, but it's Sarah's story.
Kit 59693 in that group has problems with his lineage. He shares a common ancestor, Julian Huston Mitchell b1895 with another participant, kit 59416 in Group 14.That lineage correctly goes back to a John bc1790, lived in Ross Co, OH married Rosanna Beard.Ross Co land records indicate that John's father and grandfather were both Johns and not related to the John who died 1767 in Lancaster Co, PA as claimed by the Group 4 guy. There's a problem somewhere as these 2 men's Mitchells aren't related.Until that is resolved kit 59693's lineage (the correct parts) don't help. There is also a new participant whose lineage hasn't been posted yet.
Find that third cousin! If he's related to James of Robertson, his DNA should match that of Daniel b 1781 Bedford Co, VA.
The DNA projects are helping to fill in gaps in the later 1700's through the early 1800's when the settlement of new areas was growing rapidly, and people didn't leave many forwarding addresses.
