Interesting.Thank you.I was not aware that there was a Batts Mitchell. There was a Batts Newsome as well, but I’d have to organize my notes before posting that information (plus, it will only add confusion).Do you know what the family connection is that explains Batts Mitchell’s middle name, Newsome?
I certainly cannot say that it is not the case as I haven’t seen the records, but I am skeptical that Stephen Mitchell or Celia Batte/Batts (if she exists) came from Scotland or Ireland. The Batte family and a Mitchell family owned lands adjacent one another in the 1720’s in Prince George Co., VA (and in 1728, William Batte d. 1755 purchased land from an Edward Mitchell). I do not know who these Newsome’s are, but of interest is the following deed that was witnessed by two “Newsums”.Robert Batte was a son of William Batte d. 1755.
Brunswick Co., VA:Robert Batt [Robert Batte] of Prince George Co. to James Thweatt of same. 20 Jan 1757….170 acres now possessed & occupied by sd Thweat, on the south side of Meherrin River, joining John Thweatt, John Davis, Eads Smith, sd James Thweatt, John Peterson, William Batt [William Batte]. Wit: Wm Newsum [William Newsome?], James Roberts Jr, James Newsum [James Newsome?]. Proved 25 Jan 1757 Litt. Tazewell CC
The Thweatts and Battes owned land adjacent one another in Virginia. These Thweatts connect with Thweatts that were in Georgia, and I’m pretty certain that a John Batts “of Virginia” that appears in land records in early Hancock Co., GA was actually of the Batte family of Virginia.A Martha Batte (of the Virginia family) was married to a Judkins Hunt in 1769 in Virginia.Judkins Hunt supposedly died in Hancock Co., GA in 1817.See the record below. It would seem likely that a James Thweatt and a John Mitchell, both of Hancock Co., GA, shared some family connection with one another. The record was witnessed by a James Mitchell and is in reference to land in Virginia that coincidently adjoins the Battes.
Hancock Co., GA.January 25, 1800.James Thweatt and wife Elizabeth, John Mitchell and wife Sarah, John Hamilton and wife Tabitha, all of Hancock Co., GA, sell to John B. Turner of Greenville Co., VA, their rights “agreeable to the Last Will and testament of Thomas Thweatt, deceased, 225 acres in Greeneville County, on the Meherring River [Meherrin River] joining Batt’s [Batte’s] land and land that was Peterson Thweatt, deceased, …”. The record goes on to state "To the said John B. Turner after the death of Betty Galt, wife of Thomas Galt now, formerly the wife of Thomas Thweatt, deceased.” One of the witnesses is Jas. Mitchell [James Mitchell].
A few other records I have that include the surname Mitchell…
Prince George Co., VA: July 4, 1716. Inventory of estate of Joseph Hollycross, deceased, By John Peterson and William Batte, administrators. Appraised by: Edward Mitchell, Thomas Moor.
Prince George Co., VA: July 2, 1723. Wit.: James Thweatt, Miles Thweatt. March 10, 1723. Margaret, wife of Edward Mitchell relinq. dower right.
Prince George Co., VA: February 8, 1724.Thomas Mitchell of Prince George Co. to William Crawley of same, land on both sides of Baileys Run, bounded by “Reonard” Anderson, Mr. William Batts, line of Saxton, 50 acres. Wit.: Robert Bolling, William Epes [William Eppes].
Prince George Co., VA: May 14, 1728. Edward Mitchell and Margaret his wife of Prince George Co., to William Batte of same, land now in possession of Edward Mitchell, 40 acres on south side of Balys [Bailey’s] Run in Bristol Parish, Prince George Co., bounded by said William Batte and Samuel Jordan. Mitchell family burying ground excepted from deed. (Witnesses names unreadable.) Witness to peaceable possession by James Thweatt and Robert Rivers [probably, Robert Rives]. Recorded: May 14, 1728.
Hancock Co., GA: 28th January 1801. Henry Mitchell and Fanney, his wife, late Fanney Hobbs, of Hancock County to Briggs Rives of Prince George County, Virginia...a tract of land containing 450 acres being in Prince George County, Virginia on Blackwater Swamp, adjoining Holloway’s land, Butler’s land, and lands of said Rives. Wit.: J. Sanford, Thos. Mitchell [Thomas Mitchell] and William Hill. Reg: 29th January 1801.
