Hi, Janice,
I'm sorry to be so long in responding, but my fun time is quite limited right now.Matthew Mitchell married Mary Ritchie 29 Oct 1765 and had children:John, Janet c. 13 Nov 1768 at Rock Creek, Agness c. 26 Sep 1771 at Rock Creek, Matthew, William c. 06 Oct 1779 at Elizabeth Twp.All dates are from Rev. John Cuthbertson's diary.Rock Creek was in what is probably Adams Co., PA today, and ELizabeth Twp. is in Allegheny Co., PA.
There is no absolute proof that Matthew's daughter, Agness, was the Agness Mitchell who married Ebenezer Gill, but there is a considerable amount of evidence to support it.Ebenezer was the son of John Gill and Jane (Jean) Shaw who came from Ireland first to Philadelphia, then west to Allegheny Co., living in Versailles Twp. which bordered Elizabeth. In fact, Ebenezer is found on a 1796 tax list for Elizabeth Twp.The naming pattern of Ebenezer and Agness's children indicates that her parents were named Matthew and Mary, and her gravestone bears the dates 1771-1850.While the rest of the Mitchell family moved mainly to Ohio, Agness and Ebenezer remained in Allegheny Co. and are buried there in the same cemetery as Ebenezer's parents.
Because my Mitchell changed to Gill to Euwer, I am not aware of anyone in that family who still carries the Gill or Mitchell surname so we have no one I know of who has done DNA testing. My brother did it, but it was for Swank. There is a David Ross Gill who I saw with messages at genealogy, probably in the Gill forum.Since your husband matches him, you might want to try contacting him for a possible paper match as well.I did note that his Gill ancestors were from England and probably came later than my John Gill.We know John came from Ireland because he had a letter of introduction from his minister dated 19 May 1770 that was found in his Revolutionary War pension file.
I don't think we have a match in either Gill or Mitchell.I have had no luck in tracking any kind of will for Matthew Mitchell nor have the couple of other people I know of who have tried.John Gill did have a will in Allegheny Co.If I can help, I'll certainly try, but this is the best I can offer right now.
Mary Lou (Swank)
