Betty was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church here in Kingman. She was an avid reader and had a green thumb when it came to the plants she surrounded herself with. When you visited her home you were always welcomed with wonderful home-cooked Irish food.
Betty was born in Cahirkeen, County Kerry on Aug. 13, 1921, to Patrick and Mary Fenton. Betty grew up in Waterville on the western coast of Ireland and was the youngest child in a family of 12. Both of her parents died by the time she was 4 years old, and her loving aunt Katie raised her.
After WWII Betty immigrated to the United States on the Queen Mary and settled in Chicago. There she met John Mitchell and they married in 1949. A daughter Mary was born and two-and-a-half-years later a son John was born.
John and Betty lived in Denver and California for many years and eventually moved to Kingman in 1978. They loved the desert and mountains. Her husband John preceded her in death in 1992. Betty's large family was the joy of her life. She was the wise and comforting mother and the grandmother who doled out unconditional love.
Betty was loved by all who met her and were charmed by her Irish brogue and limericks. You were always offered a "cuppa" of hot tea and a slice of homemade Irish soda bread with orange marmalade.
